U.N. holds meeting of experts in Geneva
The Meeting, which is being held at the Palais des Nations, will run through Aug. 8.
The conference includes statements and presentations from countries on a wide range of issues, including remarks from Iran on behalf of the Group of Non-Aligned and Other State Parties and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
The World Health Organization gave a special presentation on Wednesday on the ongoing ebola virus outbreak in West Africa and its possible international spread. More than 900 people have died since the outbreak began, and two American health workers are currently undergoing treatment for ebola at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
The WHO presentation was addition to statements made by the Biotechnology Industry Organization and the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers' Network on Tuesday.
Other countries and organizations that gave remarks or presentations include the Internal Committee of the Red Cross, the U.N. Office of Disarmament Affairs, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden and Italy.
The Meeting of State Parties was chaired by Ambassador Urs Schmid of Switzerland. The meeting focused on cooperation and assistance, a review of developments in science and technology and strengthening national implementation of U.N. initiatives.
