Government, military leaders participate in homeland security course
The Homeland Protection Course was the second held by the Lincoln Laboratory and HSI.
The event included 49 government leaders and members of the military. The course focused on providing a broad understanding of homeland protection missions and enabling technology, architectures and current security challenges.
The course consisted of technical lectures and hands-on exercises.
The course also included two half-day exercises. The first, a law enforcement simulation, challenged the participants to make decisions during an investigation at a large airport.
The second exercise, which was developed by the New York Fire Department, was a disaster response scenario that mimicked Superstorm Sandy. Participants responded to events in real time and used the Next Generation Incident Command System (NICS), a situational awareness tool that aids emergency responders in disaster situations.
The NICS was co-developed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate and the Lincoln Laboratory. The system, which is used by hundreds of organizations, recently helped law enforcement and other emergency responders manage 20 wildland fire incidents in California.
