Smiths Detection obtains contract for airport X-ray scanner

Smiths Detection, an advanced security solutions developer, announced on Monday that it won a contract with Bremen Airport in Germany for an advanced high-speed X-ray inspection system that checks baggage for explosives.

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT combines X-ray technology with high-resolution 3D computer tomography and can scan up to 1,800 items per hour. Smiths Detection said the high throughput speeds up inspection and improves economic efficiency. The system includes a large tunnel opening which allows for inspection of oversized objects, according to a Smiths Detection press release.

Bremen Airport has used the system on a trial basis for more than a year.

"The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is the most modern, most rapid and most efficient product in this market, and offers our customers a major new solution in planning and meeting future security needs," Barrie Foley, the vice president of Smiths Detection's Europe, Middle East and Africa region, said. "Combining two different technologies results in a much improved product and ensures that Smiths Detection maintains its leadership in high quality security solutions."

HI-SCAN 10080 XCT was designed to be integrated into existing baggage handling systems to allow for a seamless transition.

Smiths Detection offers security solutions for civil and military markets throughout the world, including technology products that identify CBRNE threats.
