Performance Institute appoints former CBP Officer Cole as 2014 fellow

The Performance Institute, a think tank in performance measurement for government, announced the appointment on Thursday of Alma Cole as a 2014 performance fellow.

Cole served as the chief systems security officer for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which is part of the DHS. PI named Cole its cybersecurity fellow.

"Given our dependence on technology at no time has cybersecurity been more important or more in the headlines; however, organizations continue to struggle to understand and manage cyber risk," Cole said. "The dynamic nature of cyber threats and vulnerabilities require ongoing adaptation of defenses. The best of breed technologies should be combined with processes and procedures which are optimized for each individual organization so that cyber risk management activities are integrated into the lifeblood of the organization."

PI said its fellows are meant to provide thought leadership, strategic direction and hands-on experience to expand the work of the institute. The think tank seeks to advance its mission to meet the critical issues and challenges that face organizations and governments.

"Mr. Cole supports and participates in the Council on Cyber Security," Bruce Anich, the executive director for PI, said. "He is a key participant on the panel that was responsible for updating the Critical Security Controls and helped to facilitate sessions with The Performance Institute. We at PI are extremely excited to have Mr. Cole help us support the use of the Critical Security Controls as a framework profile to support organizations that are adopting the National Institute of Standards and Technology Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity."

Cole said he was honored to join PI as a 2014 fellow.

"Recent years have seen an alarming rise in cyber threat activity designed to disrupt our country's critical infrastructure and steal sensitive information from both the U.S. government and private sector," Cole said. "My goal is to help organizations address these challenges with an effective and comprehensive cyber strategy and develop strategic priorities and architectures to provide resiliency against cyber attacks and espionage."

PI seeks to share best practices, work with limited budgets and improve efficiency in government to improve the delivery of citizen services.
