BARDA changes deadlines for medical countermeasure applications

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently published amendments that modified the cycle dates for white paper submissions relating to medical countermeasures.

The changes were intended to ensure that review dates occur quarterly and are aligned with all three Broad Agency Announcements (BAA) of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). The remaining deadlines for submissions this year are July 30 and Oct. 31. There are three deadlines in 2015: Jan. 30, April 30 and July 30.

BARDA is soliciting proposals research into advanced medical countermeasures including vaccines, therapeutics, devices and diagnostics. The goal is to create a pipeline of candidate medical countermeasures in support of the Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise.

The three BARDA BAAs are intended to develop medical countermeasures for CBRN agents and pandemic influenza, as well as support innovation that can enhance future development and manufacturing of those countermeasures.

The Office of Acquisition Management, Contracts and Grants within HHS is providing resources to aid in the application process. Small businesses can observe examples and aid in the development of project plans and proposals and examine step-by-step guides to the documents that could be required for submissions.

The recently announced amendments were an update to a previous announcement that changed the first interim white paper submission deadlines to Oct. 30 and Nov. 15 of last year.
