Los Altos, California offers preparedness training

The Los Altos Community Emergency Response Team recently scheduled an emergency training course that will prepare local residents to care for their loved ones after a disaster.

The CERT emergency response trainings will occur between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on April 16, 23, 30 and May 7 and 14 at Intero Real Estate Services in Los Altos. A graduation ceremony is scheduled on May 31 at Los Altos Hills Town Hall, Los Altos Town Crier reports.

After a disaster, fire, police and medical personnel may be overwhelmed for the first 72 hours. During that time, CERT members can fill the void by providing care for their neighbors and families. CERT training prepares participants to respond during an emergency, according to Los Altos Town Crier.

The course is meant to be an interactive, informative learning experience for all adult attendees. The topics include the Incident Command System, fire suppression, disaster psychology, search and rescue, damage assessment, earthquake preparedness planning and disaster medicine. Attendees must be present at all six sessions for certification.

The class costs $95 and includes a CERT vest, a hard hat and a backpack for emergency supplies. A refresher course that does not include the backpack costs $25 and is available for individuals who previously took the class, Los Altos Town Crier reports.

The Los Altos Block Action Team will run the course. The team seeks to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods and build a better sense of community through providing information, training and tools. The Los Altos BAT is a program sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation.
