Jordan to host simulated CTBT on-site nuclear inspection
An OSI is the final verification measure of the CTBT. It is used as a way to determine whether or not a nuclear explosion has taken place. The OSI for the year 2014, titled the Integrated Field Exercise 2014, will take place in Southern Jordan near the Dead Sea next November.
"Jordan is proud to host this exercise," Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications Mohammad Hussien said. "It is in line with Jordan's desire to strengthen the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation framework, in particular in the Middle East."
Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Lassina Zerbo commended Jordan on its dedication to cooperate with the CTBTO towards establishing a world free of nuclear weapons.
"I wish to express my appreciation for Jordan's outstanding leadership and cooperation with the CTBTO and the international community," Zerbo said. "With Jordan's commitment to a successful IFE14, our ability to conduct an on-site inspection under realistic and challenging conditions and demonstrate the progress made since the last integrated field exercise will be taken to a whole new level. Jordan is contributing to the strengthening of the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation framework, which is of special significance to the Middle East where the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction remains an urgent aspiration."
