IED detonates near mosque in Kabardino-Balkaria, killing at least two men
The police believe the explosion may have been the result of a bomb detonating prematurely. The Interior Ministry of Kabardino-Balkaria said the bomb was an improvised explosive device and human remains were found in the area of the explosion, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.
A spokesperson told the French AFP News organization that an investigation is underway to determine the exact number of victims. An Interfax police source said that body parts from two men were found. The authorities speculate the bomb's casualties were terrorists who accidentally killed themselves when the bomb detonated early, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
Kabardino-Balkaria is considered a peaceful area of the Russian Caucasus. The province has recently been affected by an Islamist insurgency, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.
