U.N. secretary-general discusses peace efforts with National Coalition for the Syrian opposition forces President al-Jarba
Coalition President al-Jarba committed to send a delegation to a U.N. conference, set to take place in the middle of November in Geneva, in an effort to diplomatically bring peace to a nation that has been in turmoil since March 2011.
Ban asked al-Jarba to decide on a National Coalition representative and united delegation to attend and participate in peace talks with representatives of the Assad regime, which is currently in power, and the international community.
The conflict began as an attempt to oust Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad. Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 100,000 people have lost their lives, more than two million people are refugees in neighboring countries and more than four million people are displaced within Syria.
Ban asked al-Jarba to begin serious discussions as soon as possible and to include the accountability the organization must take for allegedly committing war crimes.
