IAEA Director General Amano briefs German Ambassadors at conference
Amano was invited to attend a Conference of German Ambassadors by German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Guido Westerwelle, who also attended the conference. Amano briefed conference attendees on IAEA activities and said that Germany has been a major supporter of the IAEA sinceits inception.
Amano said that the IAEA would continue to work closely with Germany and German authorities, while learning from Germany's experiences with decommissioning, waste disposal, strengthening global efforts on nuclear safety and security and non-proliferation.
After his address to the ambassadors, Amano had meetings with Westerwelle, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economics and Technology Stefan Kapferer and senior officials from the Federal Chancellery, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for the Environment. Topics of these meetings included issues related to non-proliferation, nuclear security, nuclear safety and the peaceful uses of nuclear technologies.
The International Atomic Energy Agency was setup in 1957 as an organization within the United Nations family. The agency's goal is to work with its Member States to promote safe and secure ways to use nuclear technologies.
