3rd Session of 2013 Conference on Disarmament begins
The CD, which is the world's only permanent multilateral disarmament treaty negotiating body, is set to run seven weeks, from July 29 to September 13. Representatives from 65 U.N. member states will be in attendance. For the conference, the presidencies of the session will be held by Iran and Ireland.
The conference will tackle issues like nuclear disarmament, the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty, prevention of an arms race in outer space and Negative Security Assurances.
Previous conferences have seen the successfully negotiating of international instruments like the Chemical Weapons Convention, Biological Weapons Conventions, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban-Treaty
The UNRCPD promotes global disarmament and non-proliferation norms and enhances regional dialogue on disarmament, non-proliferation and outreach and advocacy activities in order to enhance public awareness about issues regarding disarmament within the framework of global peace and international security. The UNRCPD arose from U.N. General Assembly resolution A/42/39D on November 30, 1987.
