Mississippi Army and Air National Guard to deploy to Washington for inauguration
The guardsmen, who are scheduled to arrive on January 18, have been tasked with conducting chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threat-prevention duties. They will perform their mission in support of civilian authorities while in the capital. Canton's 112th Military Police Battalion, Brandon's 113th Military Police Company, Clinton's 114th Military Police Company and members of Meridian's 155th Brigade Special Troops Battalion makeup the Mississippi Army National Guard contingent.
Flowood's 172nd Airlift Wing and Meridian's 186th Air Refueling Wing from the U.S. Air National Guard plan to deploy as a joint task force to aid the U.S. Secret Service in their duties, ClarionLedger.com reports.
More than 6,000 National Guard personnel are to be deployed inside the District, while another 2,000 will be held on alert just outside in case of emergency. The guardsmen selected for inauguration duty hail from more than 25 states, and many performed a similar function during the 2009 ceremonies.
