BD&E receives SBIR contract for homemade explosive detector
The Small Business Innovative Research contract will enable BD&E to develop the sensor to detect HME, classify the nature of the materials and provide a warning to troops. The device could be used for onsite inspections and at security checkpoints to detect chemical residues on equipment and personnel.
The technique devised to create the detectors could also be used for chemical and biological agents.
The system combines the HyperPixel Array imager developed by BD&E with research conducted at the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The program captures high sensitivity chemical imagery of a scene and uses software to analyze data to identify chemical materials in the image. The system also allows for operators to search for residual chemical fingerprints on car doors or spills on the ground.
The SBIR program was developed by the Small Business Administration Office to make sure that small, innovative and high-tech businesses are a significant part of research and development efforts by the federal government.
BD&E already has contracts with the Missile Defense Agency, the National Aeronautic and Space Agency, the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, and the Department of Homeland Security.
