Bracco Diagnostics showcases chemical weapons decontamination lotion

Bracco Diagnostics, Inc., a developer and marketer of clinical agents for use in medicine, tomography and imaging, gave a tour to public officials and business dignitaries through an open house Tuesday.
The company took the attendees through the University of South Mississippi's Accelerator business and science incubator. One of the main attractions of the Hattiesburg, Miss.-based facility was a lotion that protects military troops from hazardous chemicals, Hattiesburg American reports.
Bracco Diagnostic's RSDecon division produces Reactive Skin Decontamination Lotion, which is used by the U.S. Department of Defense and military forces in NATO countries. The topical skin decontamination product is intended to neutralize or remove chemical warfare agents and toxins from the skin. Using the lotion can significantly reduce the effects of exposure to chemical warfare.
Tim Henry, the vice president and general manager of Bracco's Healthcare Productive Products Division, said that a soldier can easily open a packet, wipe the skin with the sponge and then rinse if exposed to chemicals that are hazardous.
RSDecon, headquartered in Princeton, N.J., became an Accelerator tenant last year and started production of its patented lotion. The company has the ability to produce 700,000 packets a month in the facility. Henry said that the open house gave the company an opportunity to highlight its success as an Accelerator tenant.
"HPPD is a small start-up and an entrepreneurial success story and our core product is RSDL," Henry said, according to Hattiesburg American. "We're making the battlefields safe for our war fighters from warfare agents."
Victor Murphy, a product director of hazard mitigation with Joint Project Manager Protection, said that the U.S. Defense Department has purchased close to 1.6 million kits for use in joint military services.
"What you're seeing is the tip of the iceberg," Murphy said, according to Hattiesburg American. "This product could expand outside of DoD use. This is a great product and I look forward to coming here for more opportunities here."
