Sen. Barbara Mikulski named Legislator of the Year by BIO

Senator Barbara Mikulski, D-MD, has been selected as Legislator of the Year for 2009-2010 by the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

“During Senator Mikulski’s long-standing service on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, she has provided thoughtful and responsive leadership on issues critical to the biotechnology community such as drug safety and importation,” BIO President Jim Greenwood said. “She played a key role in the creation of a fair and balanced pathway for the approval of biosimilars which protects patient safety and provides incentives for continued innovation.”

Sen. Mikulski received the award as part of the BIO Legislative Day Fly-In, which saw over 200 biotechnology industry representatives from 32 states participate in hundreds of meeting with members of the House and Senate.

Issues critical to the biotechnology industry were discussed by participants at the Fly-In, including patent reform, NIH/FDA funding, drug importation risks and improved eligibility for Small Business Innovation Research Grants.

More than 1,200 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations nationwide and in more than 30 other nations are represented by the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

BIO is also responsible for the production of the BIO International Convention, which is the world's largest gathering of the biotechnology industry.
