Emergent BioSolutions establishes office in Germany

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Emergent BioSolutions on Aug. 23, 2005, announced the opening of an office in Munich, Germany, dedicated to the expansion of markets throughout Europe and Asia.

Dr. Andreas Hartmann, who was recently named vice president of international markets for Emergent BioSolutions, will head the office.

Emergent BioSolutions, through its biodefense business unit, manufactures and markets BioThrax, the only FDA-approved vaccine for the prevention of anthrax. More than five million doses of BioThrax have been administered by the U.S. Department of Defense since 1998 in support of the military’s anthrax vaccine immunization program. In May 2005, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services contracted to purchase five million doses of BioThrax for the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile.

Increased manufacturing capacity in Lansing, Mich., allows expansion of product sales both internationally and domestically.

“We are extremely pleased that Andreas has joined our growing organization,” said Kyle Keese, vice president sales and marketing for Emergent BioSolutions. “We have every confidence that our German operations, under Andreas’ leadership, will lead to the continued and successful expansion of our market reach and global presence.”

Hartmann previously served as the vice president of commercial and business development for the Danish company Bavarian Nordic.

To date, several nations in addition to the United States have procured the product and with the awareness of increased product availability, interest in the Middle East, Asia and Europe is growing.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration licensed BioThrax in 1970.

Emergent BioSolutions Inc., formed in 2004, is dedicated to the research, development and manufacture of products that harness the immune system to treat and prevent disease. These include vaccines and related products for prophylactic and therapeutic use against common infectious diseases and biological weapons of mass destruction.
