Napolitano announces $88 million for port inspection technology

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced $88 million in funding for non-intrusive Inspection equipment to scan commercial traffic for contraband through X-ray and other imaging technologies.

"These cutting-edge technologies will help us better detect threats at our nation's borders while expediting legitimate travel and trade," Napolitano said in a press release from the Department of Homeland Security.

Napolitano's announcement Oct. 14 includes eight contracts for NII technologies to provide fixed and mobile detection capabilities for deployment by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at and between U.S. ports of entry.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act committed more than $3 billion for homeland security projects through DHS and the General Services Administration. Of the nearly $1 billion allocated to Customs and Border Protection and GSA for port and border security projects, $100 million was dedicated to NII technologies.
