Smiths Detection has announced Thursday that its HI-SCAN 6040-2is HR system has obtained Standard 3 Type C certification from the European Civil Aviation Conference, which means the machine can detect liquid explosives.

The system uses a dual X-ray to detect liquid explosives at security checkpoints, both in luggage and carry-on containers.

This higher detection ability aims to make air travel safer by helping to keep hazardous liquids off passenger flights.

"HI-SCAN 6040-2is HR is one of our newest products on the aviation market. We are proud that it is the first dual-view X-ray system in the world to achieve this standard. Thanks to the extended approval, the system offers particularly good value for money,"  Barrie Foley, Smiths Detection's EMEA Region vice president, said.

The company specializes in developing and manufacturing government-regulated technology used in security and military contexts. Its products are used to detect and identify dangerous and explosive materials, including chemical and biological agents, weapons, narcotics, and radiological and nuclear threats. It is a part of Smiths Group, a global leader in integrated technology used in the detection, energy, medical and communication markets.
