Positive ID and ENSCO, Inc., are the recipients of a contract from the U.S. Department of the Interior for the Sense Net Program, Positive ID announced on Friday.

The award will be used to implement systems to detect biological threats that work faster and are less expensive while using existing infrastructure.

PositiveID will offer its Firefly Dx system, which derives results from a biological sample in less than half an hour at the location of sampling. This is compared to the traditional two to four hour sampling period, and is expected to provide more accurate diagnostics to allow for much quicker treatment. Ensco is responsible for system integration and support.

"We are pleased to work with ENSCO on this effort for the Department of Homeland Security's SenseNet program," William J. Caragol, the chairman and CEO of PositiveID, said. "We believe our Firefly Dx system, coupled with ENSCO's systems expertise, can provide an ideal solution for the biological detection capabilities that DHS is pursuing."

The Firefly Dx system can process multiple types of samples including whole blood urine or environmental swabs from the field. The system allows technicians to analyze a single sample for different targets.
