MEMA launches Massachusetts Alerts app

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) launched an expanded smartphone app on Sept. 1 to provide residents with the latest information on disasters, public safety incidents and severe weather.

Known as Massachusetts Alerts, the free app is the next generation of MEMA's original alert app, Ping4Alerts, which was released in 2012. Since then, MEMA's alerts system has forewarned tens of thousands of Massachusetts residents about severe weather incidents such as severe thunderstorms, tropical storms, hurricanes and tornadoes, hazardous materials incidents and evacuation orders.

The expanded app provides disaster alerts, information about ongoing incidents and preparedness tips. It also allows users to customize the alerts they receive. Smartphone users can choose to receive real-time Amber Alerts about missing children; critical disaster information, including evacuation and shelter information; information on power outages; and other public safety tips.

Massachusetts Alerts is available for both Apple and Android devices.
