A sandstorm wreaks havoc – six dead in the pile

Dozens injured and at least six dead: There was a backlog in the US state of Illinois. The trigger was a dust storm.

A buildup caused by a dust storm killed six people in the United States on Monday. Illinois State Police said more than 30 injured people were taken to hospitals. Television footage showed a picture of the destruction, with dozens of smashed cars, including burning trucks, huddled together. Some vehicles stopped on the side of the road. A thick layer of earth-colored dust appeared over everything.

The buildup occurred around 11 a.m. local time on the Saint-Louis-Chicago Highway, near the town of Farmersville. It stretches for three kilometers in both directions. Police said two articulated trucks caught fire. About 30 trucks and 40 to 60 cars were involved in the collision.

Authorities said many of the rear-end collisions were due to the fact that strong winds blew dust from fields in the direction of the highway and completely blinded drivers.

In July 2021, eight people died in a pileup caused by a sandstorm in the US state of Utah in the western United States.
