A runner has been killed by a bear in the northern Italian province of Trentino. On Friday, authorities said it was the first fatal incident of a bear in the country’s history. The body of the 26-year-old was discovered in the municipality of Caldes on Thursday night.
According to investigators, an autopsy on Friday showed that the young man was killed by a bear. With the help of DNA traces, the animal is identified and shot down.
In March, a bear attacked a man nearby. Popular with hikers and tourists, Val di Sole is located in the Italian Alps north of Lake Garda. About a hundred bears now live there in the wild – they were reintroduced between 1996 and 2004 as part of the European Union’s Live Ursus project. According to local authorities, only 50 bears are planned.
