Agenda announced for CBRN First Response conference
Organized by The Development Network (TDN), UK, the conference will feature political, tactical, and scenario-based discussions and exhibitions to educate and engage the international chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense community.
The conference opens with comments by Battalion Chief Robert J. Ingram, who is the WMD branch chief for the Center for Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness within the New York Fire Department, as well as chairman of the conference.
Shawn DeCaluwe, head of the Assistance and Protection Branch within the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapon (OPCW), will deliver the opening keynote address on the ramifications of the Syrian conflict. The talk will focus on the Chemical Weapons Convention and the OPCW; the OPCW's involvement in the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria; and the OPCW's assistance, protection activities and capacity building in the field of chemical response.
Among the topic to be discussed in other sessions on the first day are: establishing a multi-agency approach to CBRN threats; methods of chemical agent distribution and exposure; establishing contained areas to treat the infected; forensics in present and future CBRN defense; methods of safe operation at a crime scene where CBRN agents are present; and improving national capacity to respond to CBRN incidents
Items on the agenda for Jan. 27 include a discussion of fallout from the European Union (EU) Cooperation Initiative; providing intensive care to highly contagious patients; failings in symptom recognition that led to the spread of Ebola virus; vaccines for emergent and re-emergent infectious agents; antiviral research to mitigate the risk of future pandemics; mitigating the risk of chemical and biological exposure; refining biological detection systems; improving chemical and biological defense systems; and detection and identification of chemical and explosive hazards in opaque containers.
