Four employees from the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) were recognized earlier this month for their work in course development of personal protective equipment for emergency responders.

All those who were awarded the Unity of Effort Award for Ebola Worldwide Response from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are a part of the CDP’s Training and Education Curriculum Department. The team consisted of Babbette Harman, lead editor; Jamie Johnson, lead writer; Mallory Lowe, team leader; and Jeremy Guthrie, tasked with preparing video and job aid materials.

The team prepared the eight-hour Personal Protective Measures for Biological Events (PPMB) course over a three-day period. According to the CDP, this typically takes approximately six days to complete.

"I am very proud that the hard work of these members of the CDP’s staff was recognized by the secretary and they received this award," CDP Superintendent Mike King said. "They are representative of the entire CDP staff who routinely perform their duties with unmatched commitment and professionalism."

This course has since been utilized by 36 cities across the country and approximately 1,678 response personnel have been trained through this course. It was originally initiated in response to the first Ebola case to be diagnosed in the U.S.

"The development of the PPMB course was critical in meeting the needs of first responders and health care workers, as well as protecting them," Harman said. "The [proper] use of personal protective equipment for these individuals allowed them to continue to work effectively and safety."
