OPCW releases details on director-general's visit to Pakistan.
Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü visited Pakistan this past week.

Üzümcü was in Pakistan between Nov. 18 and 19. During his visit, Üzümcü and Tariq Fatemi, special assistant to the prime minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, initiated the Regional Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) Assistance and Protection Center. He also addressed attendees of an international course that was hosted at the center and was present during a practical exercise.

Üzümcü met with Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, among other senior officials. During this time, the director-general recognized the efforts of the country in association with OPCW and implementation of the CWC. Officials were also provided new information on the situation in Syria and the organization’s work related to the situation. They discussed what potential cooperative efforts could be taken in order to facilitate improved partnerships between both sides.

The director-general was also able to visit the Chemical Protection Research Laboratory and met with Irfan Burney, chairman of the National Engineering and Scientific Commission. While in attendance, Üzümcü delivered a keynote speech at the “Achievements of the OPCW and its Future Role in Post-Destruction Phase” seminar at the Institute of Strategic Studies.
