PositiveID Corp. has launched a new prototype of their Firefly Dx that incorporates sample preparation capability to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection device, the company announced on Tuesday.

The device has shown to be effective in providing testing results within 20 minutes. The company has stated that the device aims to provide an accurate diagnostic tool for areas and situations that are not conducive for laboratory testing.

The sample preparation system consists of a breadboard system that can utilize injection cartridges that purify samples for the screening process.

“In addition to having PCR capabilities on the Firefly Dx prototype, we are now at the next iteration of the design, which includes sample prep,” William Caragol, chairman and CEO of PositiveID, said. “In a short period of time, we expect to be at a stage of our development where we can take a sample (whole organism), run it through sample prep and purification followed by the real-time optics and PCR testing on one system. That will be a critical milestone in our development as we prepare for field-testing later next year.”

The global PCR market, which the device is targeting, is predicted to grow to approximately $27.4 billion by the end of this year.
