NIH issues National Biosafety Stewardship Month notice

NIH issues National Biosafety Stewardship Month notice.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a notice at the end of September that announced the National Biosafety Stewardship Month and served as a reminder of health and safety requirements for grantees.

Within the notice, the NIH includes thematic items for biological institutions to focus on to further enhance safety and responsible management in research laboratories. These include engaging senior staff and administrators to communicate the importance of laboratory safety and enhancing staff-wide training in safety operations. Also transparency measures including highlighting successes at the institution and promoting overall public transparency.

This month was designated for encouraging research institutions to reinforce their biosafety policies and procedures. They also remind institutions the necessity of meeting all safety standards from federal, state and local government agencies.

The NIH reminds those institutions seeking grants from the institute that special requirements are necessary in the development of biological safety plans in order to be eligible for grant funding. These include that any research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules must follow practices, oversight measures and containment methods established within NIH Guidelines.

The NIH states that compliance with established regulations will reflect safety consciousness within the working culture of the laboratory space.
