European airports snapping up Morpho explosives-trace detectors

Morpho Detection said this week that it has shipped nearly 900 of its Itemiser 4DX explosives-trace detectors (ETD) to European airports this year as they strive to comply with new European Union requirements for enhanced explosives screening of passengers.

The system utilizes ion-trap mobility spectrometry (ITMS) to detect and identify trace materials that are associated with explosives on skin, clothing, luggage and other surfaces. It does not utilize any radiation to perform its detection operation, so operators are not required to manage additional regulatory and administrative tasks.

"After becoming the first non-rad ETD system deployed airport-wide to an EU aviation checkpoint at Copenhagen Airport, the rapid adoption of Itemiser 4DX in Europe confirms its superior detection capabilities and validates the substantial investment Morpho has made in localized sales and service support," Karen Bomba, president and CEO of Morpho Detection, said. "For 15 years, Morpho has worked tirelessly -- developing, deploying and servicing Itemiser systems to help protect travelers. We take great pride in the trust put in us by the EU airport community."

Countries that have received these units include Germany, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria and Denmark.

The system is currently approved for cargo and passenger screening throughout member states of the European Civil Aviation Commission.
