Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health released updated data Monday on the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in the country and also confirmed a new case in the city of Najran.

There were 38 patients with active cases admitted to hospitals or isolated in their homes in Saudi Arabia as of Monday. The ministry reported that since 2012 there have been 1,246 cases of MERS in Saudi Arabia that have resulted in 532 fatalities.

The Ministry of Health reported that no deaths took place in the 24-hour period leading up to the release of Monday's report.

The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention lists fever, shortness of breath and a cough as primary symptoms of MERS. Complications from the disease can include pneumonia and kidney failure. The CDC said that the current methods of transmission are not clear. It is thought that the virus is able to spread through respiratory secretions and through close contact between family members and those providing care in a health care setting.

Cases in the U.S. have mostly been linked to travel to the Arabian Peninsula.
