Disarmament Affairs welcomes incoming president at conference

Incoming president of the Conference on Disarmament Henk Cor Van Der Kwast spoke to ambassadors on plans for the continuation of the dialog on nuclear disarmament on Tuesday.

Acting High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Kim Won-soo and representatives from 18 nations were also present and gave statements on the conference.

Kwast said the goal for the conference presidency is to facilitate the necessary discussion process to find common ground between member states. He asked that members of the council submit working papers and bring in experts from their respective governments and academia fields to find new possibilities through discussions.

During the session, representatives from the U.S., Russia, India, China, Australia, South Korea, Turkey, the U.K. and many other nations spoke on disarmament matters and welcomed the incoming president. They also congratulated Michael Møller for his official appointment as the director-general of the Conference on Disarmament.

Kim spoke on the past accomplishments of the Conference and said it was imperative that the conference continue to function and that it continue to work toward solutions for nuclear disarmament on a global scale. A Wednesday meeting continued the discussion on a proposed decision on the appointment of a special coordinator to facilitate conference work.
