Timperley to chair scientific advisory board for OPCW

Chris Timperley of the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) was named chairman of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' (OPCW) Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) on Wednesday.

According to the U.K. government, Timperley is the first U.K. citizen to hold this position.

"I was honored to be elected to this position, and have started preparations for the SAB’s report on science and technology for the Fourth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2018," Timperley said.

Previously Timperley served as a part of the lab's Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) Division and served as the SAB's vice-chairperson. On the OPCW SAB personnel site it states that Timperley has also served as part of the United Nations Special Commission and that his expertise lies in chemical warfare agents, poisons, toxicology and chemistry specific to phosphorus and organic fluorine.

"Chris’ appointment reflects the international standing of DSTL and the quality of evidence-based scientific advice that we give – particularly in this case as the only U.K.-accredited OPCW lab," DSTL Chief Executive Johnathan Lyle said.

The OPCW SAB is made up of independent experts from member states of the Chemical Weapons Convention. This board is charged with providing comprehensive scientific reports for the review conferences every five years.
