Smiths Detection nabs Army order for contamination-free, mobile medical units

The U.S. Army has placed a $27.7 million order with Smiths Detection Inc. for the company’s Chemical Biological Protective Shelters.

The Army’s order is for the CBPS-M8E1 model, which is a specialized, contamination-free mobile medical shelter that’s highly resistent to chemical and biological threats, among others.

“The CBPSs are for use by the Army or the U.S. National Guard, ranging in scenarios from natural disasters to providing emergency medical shelter where deployed,” Dana Knox-Gower, director of SDI’s communications and marketing for the Americas, told BioPrepWatch.

The ongoing contract is particularly beneficial for SDI, Knox-Gower said, because it supports the company’s “commitment to bring our innovative, versatile technology to the field to help protect our warfighters, first responders, medical personnel and civilians.”

CBPSs also are designed to be used in during emergencies such as terrorist attacks. The agent-free environments provide a safe haven for patients, as well as for any staff providing healthcare. In fact, medical combat services and combat service support personnel are able to work inside a CBPS without continuously wearing protective clothing, Knox-Gower said.

Specifically, SDI’s mobile medical shelters include 400-square-feet of work space; onboard primary and backup power generators; a digital touch-screen-operated control system; expanded capacity for medical support equipment; and they’re climate-controlled and environmentally controlled to sustain operations in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees Fahrenheit up to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, up to 15 patients may be transported in or out of the system in one hour.

SDI -- known for manufacturing sensors that detect chemical agents, biohazards, explosives, weapons, narcotics and contraband -- manufactures CBPSs at its U.S. headquarters in Edgewood, Md. The company also manufactures specialized products and manages programs for the U.S. Department of Defense and Homeland Security. SDI is part of Smiths Group plc, a global technology business based in London.
