Foreign Affairs Committee to hold Syria crisis hearing

Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Ed Royce announced that there will be a hearing on June 17 regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Witnesses for this hearing include: Robert Ford, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute; Farouq Habib, a Syria Program Manager with the Mayday Rescue; Dr. Mohamed Tennari, Idlib coordinator for the Syrian-American Medical Society; and Annie Sparrow, deputy director of the Human Rights Program and assistant professor of Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

"The Assad regime continues its chemical weapon strikes, despite Obama Administration claims to have destroyed its illegal stockpile," Royce said. "Assad denies having any chemical weapons, while his forces brazenly gas men, women and children. This hearing will highlight these horrific attacks and what can be done to protect vulnerable Syrian civilians. The committee will hear chilling accounts, including from brave responders working to save the lives of those targeted by the Assad regime."

The Human Rights Watch, the Daily Sabah and the Guardian report that chemical attacks have occurred in April and May in the Idlib region. The Guardian states that between the middle of March and May there were 35 attacks utilizing barrels of chlorine gas reported in the Idlib region.
