Graaf appointed as UNMEER head

Peter Jan Graaf of the Netherlands was named United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's acting special representative and head of the U.N. Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) on Saturday.

He will replace Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, who was named the secretary-general's special envoy to Yemen. This comes after Jamal Benomar stepped down from the role.

Ki-moon expressed his gratitude for Ahmed's work as the head of UNMEER and leadership in aiding the recovery procedure for countries affected by Ebola.

Graaf  has served as the Ebola crisis manager for Liberia since October 2014. He also served in several countries in Africa as part of the World Health organization (WHO).

The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the WHO recently stated that no additional cases of the Ebola virus have been reported in Liberia. The last confirmed case in the country died on March 27.

As of April 22, 33 additional cases of Ebola had been reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone.
