Smiths Detection selected for London's Luton Airport renovations

As a part of London's Luton Airport's (LLA) planned renovation of approximately $149.5 million, Smiths Detection was selected as a contractual partner for the airport's security enhancements, the company announced on Tuesday.

As a part of their contract, Smiths will provide new screening machines for passengers which include the HI-SCAN 6040-2is X-ray scanners and a network checkpoint system. According to the announcement, this technological upgrade will improve the traveler experience with improved security practices that allow for faster screening.

“The combination of the HI-SCAN 6040-2is, Checkpoint.Evo and Herbert’s TRS provides an outstanding technological solution to the requirement for smarter checkpoints," Andrew Davis, head of the Europe, Middle East and Africa markets for Smiths Detection, said. The result will be a significant improvement in operational efficiency and we are delighted London Luton Airport has chosen to continue our relationship for the supply of advanced security solutions.”

Along with security enhancements, the airport is redesigning its terminals to increase passenger capacity to 18 million passengers per year by 2026.

"We are spending over ($149.5 million) to transform LLA by adding new capacity and offering the best possible experience for passengers," Airport Operations Director Neil Thompson said. "Smiths Detection’s technology gives us the combination of reliability and performance we need to make security screening as fast and efficient as possible for the growing number of passengers who choose to fly from London Luton Airport.”
