Costa Rica official visits OPCW headquarters
During his visit, Manuel Antonio Gonzalez Sanz met with OPCW Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü. Sanz said the OPCW's work is and will continue to receive full support from his country.
During their meeting, both parties discussed further implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and the status of the OPCW's efforts against the Syrian chemical weapons program. Also discussed were initiatives in areas of cooperation, protection and assistance taken on by the organization.
Chemical attacks that are thought to have been carried out by the Bashar al-Assad regime took place at the end of March in the Idlib region of the country. Organizations including Doctors Without Borders and the Syrian American Medical Society reported that barrels containing chlorine gas were dropped on Samrin and neighboring towns and villages. Many international organizations have called on the United Nations, the U.S., the U.K. and others to act on this situation.
The convention that prohibits the development, use and stockpiling of chemical weapons has roughly 98 percent support among sovereign nations, including Syria's.
