South African delegation visits OPCW
The members expressed their support for the OPCW and their efforts to ensure the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is followed among it state parties. The delegation also discussed the importance of future collaboration between the organization and individual member states to address non-members of the convention and those member states that violate the convention.
In their meeting with Asirwatham, they discussed the organization's work in chemical safety and security. An overview of the convention's implementation was also made available. A key portion of this was the progression of the destruction and disposal of armaments held by member states in aging stockpiles.
The CWC has been signed and ratified by nearly 98 percent of the global nations, according to OPCW. Currently, there are six countries that have not ratified the convention, with only two of these signing it. Myanmar and Israel have signed the convention, but they have yet to ratify it in their respective governments. Angola, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Egypt and South Sudan have not signed the CWC, nor have they ratified it.
