ChemImage Sensor Systems to develop CWA detector

Hyperspectral imaging company ChemImage Sensor Systems (CISS) announced on Monday that it was selected to develop a portable detection system for chemical warfare agents (CWAs) under the U.S. Army Next Generation Chemical Detector program.

The work will be conducted under the direction of the joint project manager for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Contamination Avoidance, according to a CISS press release.

"Recent events have shown us that CWAs are still a very real threat in our world," Matthew P. Nelson, the chief scientist and business director for CISS, said. "CISS is excited about working with the U.S. Army to provide handheld instruments that dramatically lessen the warfighter impact of these terrible weapons of mass destruction."

CISS will configure and evaluate its existing hyperspectral imaging technology as part of the project. The company will then progress the development of the system through the brassboard and final prototype stages, with each phase accompanied by rigorous government testing.

"We welcome the opportunity to show how hyperspectral imaging can perform reliable CWA detection and location with the goal of saving lives," Charles W. Gardner, a project manager for CISS, said

CISS was founded in 2013 and is based out of Pittsburgh, Pa. The company specializes in standoff threat detection and technology to counter improvised explosive devices.
