The awards highlight innovative local practices and achievements through the recognition of individuals and organizations making outstanding contributions to making their communities safer, stronger, better prepared and more resilient.

FEMA will review all entries, which must feature program activities taking place between Jan. 1, 2013 and May 30, before selecting the finalists.

Winners will be selected by a distinguished panel of representatives from the management community in several categories, including outstanding state citizen corps initiatives, outstanding local citizen corps initiatives, outstanding community emergency response team initiatives, community preparedness heroes and outstanding youth preparedness initiatives.

Other categories include awareness to action, survivor empowerment and integration, technological innovation and preparing the whole community.
