Philadelphia MDO-OEM seeks ready coordinator

The city of Philadelphia Managing Director's Office of Emergency Management is seeking a ready coordinator/assistant public information officer, according to a hiring notice posted on Monday on iaem.com.

The full-time position requires accessibility after regular working hours, including work on weekends and holidays. All staff in the OEM may be subject to being on-call 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency. Candidates must be Philadelphia city residents within six months of hire.

The individual hired for the position will conduct public education, public information and promotional work for the OEM's Ready, Or NOT? public emergency preparedness education campaign. The coordinator will oversee the continued development and annual rollout of the campaign, which is meant to influence the public to take personal responsibility for emergency preparedness.

The coordinator will participate in the overall strategic development and planning for the campaign and related programs. Typical work includes drafting content for collateral materials, updating emergency preparedness websites, drafting emergency preparedness messages, developing and maintaining working relationships with the media, corporate sponsors and the general public and representing the OEM at conferences, meetings, civic associations and professional associations.

Candidates must have completed a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major coursework in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism or a related field. Individuals considered must also have three years of public relations or media experience, preferably in emergency management or related public agencies. Candidates can substitute an equivalent combination of training and experience for the minimum requirements.

Candidates will be judged on their ability to prepare interesting and informative press materials, evaluate subject matter materials from different viewpoints and establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

The Philadelphia MDO-OEM works to mitigate, plan and prepare for emergencies, develop tools and identify resources to support the city's preparedness, educate the public about preparedness and coordinate emergency response and recovery efforts.
