Smiths Detection contracted to supply chemical detection technology
The technology will allow U.S. Customs and Border Protection to conduct quick and comprehensive in-field analysis of unidentified chemicals at borders and points of entry. Smiths Detection makes multiple portable and handheld systems used to identify suspected threatening or illegal materials, including weapons of mass destruction, toxic industrial chemicals, explosives and narcotics.

"Our technology allows government agencies like the Customs and Border Protection to make fast decisions helping to reduce exposure, time and costs when dealing with a suspected threat or illegal substances."
Smiths Detection's latest products include ACE-ID, a Raman chemical identifier that uses a laser to identify liquids and solids through certain glass and plastics, and HazMatID Elite, a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer that uses light absorption to identify materials.
Smiths Detection designs and manufactures solutions to identify and detect threats, including chemical, biological and nuclear agents. The company's customers include the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense.
