Registration now open for Wisconsin emergency management conference

Registration is now open for the 47th Annual Governor's Conference on Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs Division of Emergency Management said on Monday.

The conference will take place on March 19 and 20 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton. Wisconsin Emergency Management anticipates more than 350 attendees from law enforcement, fire, emergency management and other first responder agencies.

Conference presenters will cover a range of topics from information on emergency preparedness to the latest on security threats. Topics include threat assessment and its importance to mitigating violence, cybersecurity, integrating mitigation into local emergency management, response to a communicable disease outbreak, power outage response, creating a robust public awareness campaign, active killer survival, a review of weather events in 2013 and the development of a comprehensive response system related to high probability and catastrophic events.

Kurt Schwartz, the undersecretary for Homeland Security and Emergency Management in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, will deliver the keynote. He will discuss the bombing at the Boston Marathon.

Jesus Villahermosa, from the Crisis Realty Training organization, will return to talk about crisis and violence issues.

Jake Wood, from disaster relief group Team Rubicon, will talk about how to lead and succeed when it matters most.
