Battelle's Samsonow receives Richardson Award for NBC defense achievements

Battelle announced on Wednesday that its research associate Melanie Samsonow received the Dr. Billy Richardson Award for Young NBC Researchers by the NBC Industry Group.

Samsonow joined Battelle in 2009. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor of science in biology. Her research has been focused on microbiology, aerosol science and decontamination testing.

The award is named for one of the NBC Industry Group's founding members, and was created to recognize leaders with a passion for education and commitment to nuclear, biological and chemical defense. Richardson was the group's first chairman.

In addition to the award, a donation of $1,000 was made in Samsonow's name to the Aberdeen Science and Math Academy in Aberdeen, Md.

More than 130 organizations that support nuclear, biological and chemical defense make up the NBC Industry Group. The group works to provide education to government and the public about NBC defense issues, and further the development of NBC defense capabilities that protect against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.

Battelle conducts research and development for national security, health and life sciences, energy and environmental fields. It also supports employee volunteer efforts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education programs, as well as philanthropic project within the community.
