U.S. Army gains PAC-2, PAC-3 and Sentinel radar capabilities

The U.S. Army and Northrop Grumman Corporation announced on Monday the successful installation of the Patriot family of missiles and the Sentinel radar to increase the Integrated Air and Missile Defense's Battle Command System's capabilities.

The project required collaboration between the Program Executive Office for Missiles and Space, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Company, Lockheed Martin and the Sentinel Project Office to install the new capabilities, which include the Patriot Advanced Capability-2 and PAC-3 missile functions and the Sentinel radar. The missiles can be controlled by a net-centric operations center.

"The IBCS open architecture facilitates plugging disparate missiles and sensors into the Army's integrated fire control network," Northrop Grumman Information Systems Vice President for Air and Missile Defense Systems Kelley Zelickson said. "Thus, in addition to affordable integration and expanded capability, IBCS provides the Army with alternatives to buying or upgrading unique command and control systems when it desires to incorporate new missile or sensor components."

A demonstration of the new capabilities has been scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013; it will be held at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. The demonstration will showcase the capabilities of all new installations. Training by the Army on how to operate the new technology is scheduled to begin in 2014 by firing Army IAMD arsenal at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
