UNIFIL reports alleged rocket attack on Israel from Lebanon
The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon released a statement to the press on Thursday to report the beginning of the investigation. The rocket was allegedly launched on Thursday afternoon. UNIFIL and the Israeli Defence Forces are investigating the damage.
"This action endangers the local civilian population," UNIFIL Force Commander Major General Paolo Serra said. "It also shows that there are people who would like to disturb the quiet in this area and put at risk the gains achieved by the (Lebanese Armed Forces) and UNIFIL during the past years. I strongly condemn this violation."
Sierra said it is important that LAF and IDF work with UNIFIL to prevent the situation from potentially escalating. Both parties agreed to work with UNIFIL to keep the situation under control and expressed interest in gaining control over the situation.
UNIFIL was established in 1978 to keep the land between the Litani River and the Blue Line safe against acts of terror. UNIFIL works closely with the LAF to ensure the security of the Lebanese and Israeli people.
Sierra said the attack will not keep UNIFIL from fulfilling its mission. It will strengthen its forces in the area to ensure it gains control over the situation.
