OPCW Director-General uzumcu visits Saudi Arabia

Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Director-General Ambassador Ahmet uzumcu visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Sunday to discuss implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention to officials.

uzumcu addressed senior government officials at the King Fahd Hall at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and visited Riyadh and Jeddah during his trip. uzumcu spoke to nearly 100 ambassadors, diplomats and other authorities during his speech.

uzumcu gave a general overview of the CWC, including progress made to-date on disarmament and prevention of re-emergence. The OPCW is also looking to strengthen relations with Saudi Arabia, and uzumcu commended the country and its CWC compliance and support.

uzumcu had a Q & A session with attendees. The attendees seemed very interested and asked uzumcu questions about disarmament, regional and international security and the challenges the OPCW face.

During his visit, uzumcu also traveled to the headquarters of the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation to speak with its Chief Executive Officer about industrial affairs. uzumcu ended his trip with a visit to the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to discuss potential collaboration.
