Smiths Detection delivers first mobile Chemical Biological Protective Shelters to U.S. Army

Smiths Detection recently delivered the first of its Chemical Biological Protective Shelters to the U.S. Army as part of a $40 million contract.

The Maryland-based Smiths signed the contract to produce the mobile shelters with the Department of Defense Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense. Each shelter is self-contained and houses 400 square feet of working space that can be used for preventative and emergency care for soldiers in the field.

Three of the CBPS M8E1 units were delivered as part of the company's first shipment. A total of 111 of the systems will be sent to the U.S. Army over the next two years.

"These CBPS units offer the U.S. Army a critical dual-use capability - a highly mobile, protected environment for soldiers operating under threat of chemical and biological agents or the harsh conditions of a natural disaster response," Smiths Detection CEO Bob Bohn said.

A CBPS offers full protection against chemical and biological threats. The U.S. Army plans to use the shelters to allow surgeons to operate in a sterile environment without having to wear more constrictive protective clothing.

The system was designed to military specifications, but is also expected to be used domestically in the aftermath of natural disasters.
