Free Syrian Army capable of producing chemical weapons

Bassam al-Dada, a political adviser to the Free Syrian Army, said on Wednesday that the military group is able to make chemical weapons.

Dada said that the group would only use the chemical weapons if needed and that the munitions would only be employed against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Anatolia reports.

"If we ever use them, we will only hit the regime's bases and centers," Dada said, according to Anatolia.

The political adviser said that the knowledge required to produce the weapons came from defected army officers.

On December 23, a Syrian Presidential Guard commander said that seven Syrian solders were killed by a chemical weapon attack. The commander said the chemical attack produced a toxic yellow gas, according to Anatolia.

Syria's government claims that the death and destruction in the country is being orchestrated from the outside and that a large percentage of the armed militants are foreign nationals. Foreign-backed militants purportedly threatened to use chemical weapons against the Syrian army and pro-government civilians this week.

Navi Pillay, the United Nations high commander for human rights, announced this week that the 21-month conflict in the Arab country has led to more than 60,000 deaths. Damascus claims that armed terrorists, saboteurs and outlaws are driving the deadly violence, Press TV reports.
