DTRA partners with JoVE to publish bioweapon detector research

The Journal of Visualized Experiments recently announced plans to publish articles in cooperation with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency on recent advancements in defense technology, including the development of a new biological agent detector.

In one of the DTRA sponsored JoVE articles, State University of New York - Buffalo's Dr. David Pawlowski and Dr. Richard Karalus explain how they have developed a procedure for the isolation of nucleic acids and proteins without the use of electricity or laboratory support, according to ScienceCodex.com.

The work could significantly alter the way the military detects and monitors real-time threats, specifically from biological warfare agents.

"This is a handheld electricity-free device which can be used in the field by the warfighter, in conjunction with their detection platforms, Pawlowski said, ScienceCodex.com reports.

Pawlowski said that the technique could be used to identify typical bioweapons and liked the JoVE format as a means of communicating how the device is intended to be used.

"My reason for publishing this in JoVE is that a video article offered us the opportunity to provide a visualization of this small, handheld tool," Pawlowski said, ScienceCodex.com reports. "Giving a simple, verbal description is difficult, so a JoVE publication helps with training the warfighters how to use the technique."
