Sen. Stabenow praises BioThrax purchase

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) applauded the recent announcement that the U.S. government would buy 44.75 million doses of anthrax vaccine BioThrax from Emergent BioSolutions, Inc., to add to the nation's stockpile.

"Emergent BioSolutions is a cutting-edge company that is leading the way in protecting our country from biological threats," Stabenow said. "I have seen this innovation first-hand, which is not only keeping Michigan families safe, but is also benefiting our local economy."

Emergent BioSolutions has more than 400 employees at its Lansing, Mich., location, which will oversee the production of the newly ordered doses over a five year period.

In past contracts, Emergent BioSolutions, Inc., has delivered 55 million doses of BioThrax, the only anthrax vaccine licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to the Baltimore Sun.
